| Wild Life “sightings” in this paradoxical land encompass the legendary Yeti in the Himalayan snows, as well as the very real tigers that roam the low lying Terai regions. The colorfully dressed people of this country are of diverse descent. Their culture is rich with ancient arts and crafts, music and dance. | ![]() |
The capital of Nepal, Katmandu, is a quaint and charming town. The old temples at the Hanuman Dhoka and at Patan are exotic and impressive. Amidst the conveniences provided by western technology, curious customs are still practiced. A little girl is selected every few years to be the Kumari - Living Goddess. She is worshipped as one till she attains puberty. Katmandu also has the largest Buddhist Stupa in the world at Bodhanath. The Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath has superb golden-roofed shrines and huge doors sheathed in heavy-worked silver. |
The
hill town of Pokhara is situated near a beautiful lake formed by
the Sethi Khola river at about 3000 ft. It offers stunning views of giant
peaks such as Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Machapuchare (Tail of a Fish). The
Chitwan
National Park, situated in the Terai region, is an attractive jungle.
Meandering rivers dissect its creeper-clad forests, interspersed with great
seas of tall elephant grass. The lofty Himalayas can be seen in the distance,
about 30 miles away, Chitwan has a variety and richness of flora and fauna
that is unmatched by other forest reserves. There are hundreds of species
of birds and animals in this natural haven. Wild elephants and the massive
one-horned rhinos are among the few animals that are safe from the tigers
and leopards that prowl around the jungle.
