The
state of Kerala in southern India is an emerald green paradise. Contact
us for a range of leisure trips and touring holidays featuring
Kerala's golden beaches, blue seas, swaying coconut palms, its undulating
green slopes of spice, tea and coffee plantations, the quiet pace of life
on its palm-fringed backwaters and lagoons, and its world-famous Ayurveda
resorts.
This part of India remained relatively unaffected by the alien invasions that rocked the North after 800 AD. The Chinese, Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French, English - all came to Kerala, but as traders. They were honorably welcomed by the tolerant Hindu culture that prevailed. As a result, the ancient Hindu civilization has survived here in its purest and most fascinating form, amidst equally well-preserved cultural and religious enclaves representing all the ancient civilizations of the world.
The landscape of Kerala is dominated by groves of tall coconut palms interspersed with a patchwork of paddy fields. It is dotted with elegant white churches, ancient mosques, tiled temples with pagoda-like gateways, and dignified old family homes with rosewood pillars and carved woodwork. Rural and urban areas merge with remarkable ease .
On sparkling Kerala mornings, thousands of spotlessly dressed school-children spill out onto the roads. In little tea-shops along the way, workmen in this outstandingly literate state read newspapers and discuss politics with great vigour. The sea is never far, and fisherfolk go out in their boats to the chant of traditional folk songs.

To
the east, the state is bound by a range of low hills that trap rain-laden
monsoon clouds. Here there are thick forests and picturesque plantations
of tea, coffee, cardamom and pepper. It is the wealth of this lush land
– ivory, sandalwood and spices, that once attracted traders from distant
lands. King Solomon’s ships came in 1000 BC. In later times the Greeks
and Romans came in their galleys, and traders from the courts of the Tang
emperors came in 7 AD. The tolerant people of Kerala welcomed early Christian
settlers and the Kerala Syrian Christians are one of the oldest Christian
communities in the world. Later, Arab traders brought Islam which was also
absorbed into the rich cultural tradition of Kerala.
